Born in Florence, Italy, October 24,1934, lives in Florence. In 1963 he
saw an exhibition of Morandi’engravings and decided to learn etching.
At the Accademia in Florence he studied the art of Canalletto, Fattori
and Rembrandt under Margheri and Viviani. He holds Morandi’s chair at
the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Bologna; since 1994 has taught engraving
in Florence. |

Style - Figurative. Classic. Language with "chiaroscuro", a net with the parallel
lines, a slow and enveloping technique; Mongatti always does multiple
bitings on the plate; stopping-out the preceding lines. Leader of the
Figurative and Academic Movement "Academia Nova" which advocates
a return to pure, figurative, classical etching.
